Appalachian
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (February, 1987)
Author: Jack Kelly
Average review score:

Stunning story, a classic
Apalachin was the site of a crime "convention" in 1957. This novel takes off from that wild meeting and follows a mid-level mobster in upstate New York as his life disintegrates. It also looks at a small-town car thief, who comes up against the mob -- with disastrous consequences. The story has a trajectory ruled by fate, yet with so many twists you have to keep reading. The book gets the details of the 50s just right. A strange, compelling story, wonderful characters, and enough surprises and action to satisfy every reader. This book is quite a find -- if you can find it. A forgotten classic.

Appalachian English (Publication of the American Dialect Society, No 74)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Alabama Pr (Txt) (October, 1988)
Author: Walt Wolfram
Average review score:

A good book that doesn't exist.
There appears to have been a computer glitch here. Walt didn't write a separate book for AppE. There is the Wolfram and Christian 1976 "Appalachian English" and there is the Christian, Wolfram, and Dube 1988 (PADS 74) App-Ozark book, but that is all.

Appalachian Mountain Religion: A History
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd) (May, 1995)
Author: Deborah Vansau McCauley
Average review score:

Incredible, in-depth, with deep understanding and compassion
McCauley has managed to take a much maligned and degraded religious tradition and shed a bright and loving light upon it. Finally mountain religious life has its place in the religious history of America and particularly the growth of the division between the faith of the heart and soul and religion of the mind and intellect. A brilliant and deep book which sheds light upon ALL of American religious history.

Appalachian Spring
Published in Paperback by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Trd) (April, 1991)
Author: Marcia Bonta
Average review score:

My favorite of Bonta's
This is my favorite work of Bonta's. Living in the Appalachian's myself, I rely heavily on her work to let me know when it is time to start looking for those migrating raptors or be on the lookout for those fresh, delicate mountain wildflowers.

Appalachian Summer
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Pittsburgh Pr (Txt) (June, 1999)
Author: Marcia Bonta
Average review score:

Lots of lessons on nature, and a few about being human, too
Appalachian Summer is the third of Marcia Bonta's season chronicles of the natural life that populates the mountain in central Pennsylvania that she and her family call home. As with all her books, Appalachian Summer is a bounty of historical and scientific facts about nature. The first in her seasonal series, Appalachian Spring, duly reports the natural life unfolding from winter. In the second, Appalachian Fall, her daily journal also picks up a sinister subplot as an unethical lumberer threatens the mountain and local wildlife. In this new volume, the Bontas have taken back the land ravaged from timbering and the natural observations haromonize with more personal notes about family events. An appreciation of the fragility of life shadows the family's happiness though when the search for a missing child and her abductor moves onto their land. Bonta never forgets, however, that her mission in sharing her journal is to bring the reader up close to the wonders of nature and this she does in clear prose that tinkles with the exotic names of the plant and animal life that share our planet but are infrequently observed or respected. I regret there is only one season left for her to profile. When I read Bonta's books, I not only learn more about nature, I learn more about humankind.
